Getterman Scholars Program

Overview

The Getterman Scholars Program will be hosted in person on January 23-24, 2026.

In collaboration with the Honors College, the Getterman Scholars Program* is open to high-achieving students across academic disciplines, especially students interested in an integrated undergraduate liberal arts education that encourages connections between the various disciplines of study, the local and the global, the past and present, and the love of learning and service of God and neighbor. Getterman Scholar applicants are among the brightest in their high school classes, demonstrating success in competitive and rigorous high school course selections.

Students selected for Getterman Scholars Program events will automatically be part of Invitation to Excellence and, after attending the event, receive an Event Participation Scholarship of $20,000 ($5,000 per year for four years), unless they are awarded the Getterman Scholars Program scholarship instead. Both events offer opportunities to engage in rich programming, connect with Baylor faculty and gain a deeper understanding of campus life and the many academic success resources available.

*Students who are selected to participate in the Getterman Scholars Program will be automatically registered for Invitation to Excellence on January 23-24 and must attend to be considered for the program scholarship.

Learn more about the Getterman Scholars Program

Scholarship Value

Selected recipients will be awarded the Getterman Scholars Scholarship in the amount of tuition (minus merit-based scholarships received through the Admissions process), a book allowance, and course-related fees for eight semesters of undergraduate study, as well as housing and food in the Honors Residential College. Additionally, support is provided for one Honors College supported study abroad and one approved mission/service experience. Students may also apply for support for an approved summer research internship.  Award limits apply, and reasonable costs will also be taken into consideration during the approval process for the study abroad, mission, and research experiences. The goal is for Getterman Scholars to spend summers in enriching, engaged learning opportunities.

Please note: If you are selected as a Getterman Scholar awardee, that scholarship will take the place of the Invitation to Excellence participation scholarship.

  • Selected applicants typically score 1500 or higher on the SAT, 34 or higher on the ACT and 103 or higher on the CLT. Test-optional students with high academic GPAs and high class rankings are eligible for consideration.
  • Students who are selected to participate in this event will be automatically registered for Invitation to Excellence on January 23-24, 2026. Selected students must attend both Getterman Scholars Programs and Invitation to Excellence I in order to be eligible for the event scholarship.

    • Note: The application process will involve uploading a three-minute-long video-recorded essay that responds to one of the following prompts:
      • In Lost in the Cosmos, Walker Percy wrote that we “live in a deranged age, more deranged than usual because in spite of great scientific and technological advances, man has not the faintest idea of who he is or what he is doing.” Similarly, in one of his novels, a character notes, “You can get all A’s and still flunk life.” What is your idea of who human beings are? What are we doing and meant to do? Do we indeed live in a deranged age, and if so, what does Percy’s explanation reveal? How might a Christian education in Baylor’s Honors College help you succeed not merely academically, but more importantly, in life?
      • Among the first African-American women to earn a Ph.D., Anna Julia Cooper observed, “If women were once permitted to read Sophocles and work with logarithms, or to nibble at any side of the apple of knowledge, there would be an end forever to their sewing on buttons and embroidering slippers.” What do her words suggest about human nature, potential, and fulfillment? Are her references to Greek tragedy and mathematics merely illustrative examples, or do they indicate something significant about us and the world? What implications follow for Christian education at Baylor, your own everyday habits of life, and your aspirations for worthy contributions, whatever your field of preparation may be?

*Keep in mind, you can make changes to your application up until you click Submit. After submission, changes cannot be made.
