Best Questions to Ask a College Professor

When you are visiting with a professor, be sure to ask some questions! This is the perfect opportunity for you to learn as much as you can about a program in which you are interested. Here is a list of great questions to ask on a professor visit:

  • How much time do you believe your average student spends studying and doing assignments during the week?
It is helpful to know how much time students need to dedicate to the class/program to do well. This can help you determine if the program is right for you and give you a picture of what your life would be like as a student of this major.
  • Are most classes in this department reading/writing intensive?
Some students may worry about getting behind in a course that requires a heavy amount of reading and writing. It is important to know what to expect from a course so you can adequately prepare yourself or get assistance.
  • What are the average class sizes of the introductory courses?
Every student has a different learning style; some students may thrive in a large classroom setting while some may do better in a smaller classroom. It is important to know what the average class size would be to know if this program is a good fit for you.
  • What are characteristics of students who are successful in your courses and in this program?
It would be helpful to hear some traits or characteristics of students who have done well in the program to see if it matches your personality.
  • Do most professors have regular office hours for one-on-one meetings? What types of issues do students bring to you during office hours?
Every professor is different, and some professors make themselves more accessible than others. It is good to know if and when your professor could have office hours and what to expect from those kinds of meetings.
  • What research opportunities are available for undergrads through this department?
This may not apply in all departments, but for some students, it may be important to know what kinds of research opportunities are available. If you know you plan on attending graduate school, you may need to consider whether this program will prepare you in terms of research.
  • What kind of tutoring/assistance is available within this department?
When choosing a major, it is really important to know how tutoring and academic assistance works. Most students will need tutoring at one point or another in their college career, so it is good to know if tutoring is available in your prospective program and how to set up an appointment.
  • Is there a capstone project or internship required for this program?
A program may be more appealing to you if it helps you get a taste of real-world experience.
  • What is your favorite class to teach?
This is a fun question that helps you learn a bit more about the professor and the program.
