Journalism

Journalism

The Department of Journalism, Public Relations and New Media educates students in writing, editing, photography, videography and public relations for written and graphic communication. There are five sequences (tracks) available. Each sequence maintains the same required Journalism Core and highlights different areas within the field of journalism.

The News-Editorial sequence concentrates on traditional print and broadcast media and developing reporting, writing and editing skills. The Public Relations sequence emphasizes the importance of branding and public image. The Broadcasting sequence explores broadcasting from many perspectives, including production, digital/video media and storytelling. The Advertising sequence highlights the different aspects of a career in advertising, including creative careers such as copywriting and art direction and business careers in advertising media buying, planning and sales. The Photojournalism/Videography sequence focuses more on the visual components of journalism. Available courses include:

  • Gender, Race and Media
  • Broadcast Reporting and Writing
  • Advertising Copywriting
  • Social Media for Strategic Communications
  • Media Literacy in a Democratic Society
  • Media Photography
  • Reporting and Writing for Media

Many students create a newsletter and magazine each year highlighting news for the University. Students are also involved with the University newspaper, the Baylor Lariat, and are encouraged to take part in all the University publications to develop their skills and build their portfolio.

The Journalism department offers students the opportunity to enrich their undergraduate experience by studying abroad in programs like Baylor in Budapest, Baylor in Sicily and Baylor in Ireland.
